Take a peek below and you'll see what I'm talking about!

This blog has served me very well, and I have loved writing on it. But it's time for a new beginning.

This is the announcement you've all been waiting for....my new website www.niseyknits.com. This website has taken over a year to get off the ground, and at times I wondered whether it was the right thing to do. However I really really wanted one place where you could find my designs, my finished items and me, and the blog was just not cutting it for me.

Now this website is still a work in progress, but most of the main parts are finished, so I thought I'd share it with you. The design work and the building of the website was done by Sierra Fong and Mike Chen of Atmosphere Websites. I love, love, love their work! I'm still working with Sierra on a few more design items and hope this business relationship continues because they do amazing work, and their support is phenomenal ( I know because I've emailed them back and forth over a hundred little things, and they respond so very quickly in a very positive tone, even though I know it must be exasperating.)

I hope you will all join me in the move. I will still be blogging once a week as I used to. You can subscribe to the blog through my newsletter ( I won't spam you I promise. It will be my blog post, just delivered in a beautiful format to your inbox).

Once again, thank you, thank you, thank you for joining me on this journey so far. Hop on and let's move to the next level at www.niseyknits.com.

Have a wonderful rest of the week, and see you soon at my new home.

It's not ready yet. However, I would love some help from you today if you would bear with me. Please take this quick poll I put together (and feel free to be as silly as possible) with your answers. I can't wait to read your answers.
See you next week!
BT FALL 12, that's what! It's another beautiful collection from the in-house design team at Brooklyn Tweed. Y'all know how much I love the work done by Jared Flood and his team. His yarn lines Shelter and Loft look pretty darn good, and I'm kicking myself for not having a skein or two yet to try out.

Well, Mr. Flood and his team over at Brooklyn Tweed have given us a wonderful way to welcome fall (A.K.A knitting season) with 18 mouth-watering designs in the BT FALL 12 collection. The patterns in this collection make such good use of the Shelter yarn brand that you want to buy a few skeins in EVERY color available (or maybe it's just me? )

The first number that caught my eye was the Gelsomina Aran pullover by Veronik Avery. Those traveling stitches at the front, that rich deep blue color, the moss stitch used all over to give such awesome texture! I tell you, I fell head over heels (or needles over yarn?) in love with this pattern.

I might be on a Veronik Avery kick because my second love from this collection is also by her. Anais is a simple, elegant cowl neck sweater with a sweet lace insert that just takes it to the next level of cuteness. I'm not quite sure I can pull the sweetness thing off with this sweater, but I love the design. I love the off-white/oatmeal color of the yarn, the simple stockinette stitch that makes up the whole body of the sweater, and that cute detail at the seams (see second photo)! It's another winner!

And finally, Turnagain by Julie Hoover. You all know how much I love accessories (helloooo!! All my patterns so far have been accessories), and this cowl just knocked the air out of me when I saw it. Big stripes on one side, and skinny stripes on the other? You had me at "stripe". I love, love, love this pattern, and of all the patterns I've listed so far, it might be the one I actually make (not because I love the others less, but because I'm still too lazy to start a whole garment, and I fear I might never finish).

It's such an odd feeling, being the age you thought was "so old". Now I'm that age, and I feel exactly the same as I did 5 years ago. :)

To celebrate this milestone, and to thank you all for supporting my small knitting business, all items in my shop (and all custom orders) from now till September 30th will be 30% off. Yes, that's 30% off! So get proactive, visit my Etsy Shop and order all your holiday gifts. Use the coupon code HAPPYBIRTHDAY and help me celebrate!!

Thank you all once again for your support, through encouraging words and purchases. You are all very dear to me.

Have a great week!

PS: And here are some pretty pictures, just because! :)
The scarf in this week's post is a gift for my dad. I started this scarf in February 2011 but I quickly lost interest in it, mainly because it was all black and I wanted to knit with color. Fast forward to June 2011 when my parents came to visit us. I pulled out the scarf again and quickly started knitting, hoping to be done before they left so they could take it with them. That also did not happen.

The scarf went back to the WIP abyss until last month, when I felt so bad that I had let this scarf slide for almost a year and a half. With gritted teeth, I wallowed through the last half of the scarf with the help of many Korean drama episodes (which is why I know the word for gift in the Korean language) and finally finished it! Whew! Oh, but the story is not over. I soaked the scarf and got ready to block...and left the scarf in a bucket for about 5 days. Not good! I finally blocked it and let it lie around for two more weeks before I got around to photographing it this past Sunday. I think it's safe to say that this scarf and I were just not meant to get along.
The pattern is the Reversible Cabled Scarf by Kris Hanson. This is one of those patterns that I really wanted to knit, but I had no reason to knit it. I was ecstatic at the opportunity to make one for my dad, until he said he wanted a black scarf. Knitting in black is not fun, I can tell you right now. The yarn I used made up a bit for the color though - Dream in Color Classy in the Black Pearl colorway. The yarn was soft and smooshy, making the resulting scarf with all the ribbing and cabling so squishy! I hope my dad loves it, because I won't be making another black scarf for him. He'll have to wear a colored scarf next time. :)

Because I love this cowl and the Malabrigo Chunky yarn that I used for knitting it. The Ariosa Broken Rib Cowl by Emmy Coplea is one of the simplest and most exquisite patterns I've ever had the pleasure of knitting, and I'm quite in love with it. The pattern is a broken rib worked in the round, and the finished product looks so stunning you wouldn't believe it was hand knit. This cowl is now available in my Etsy shop here.
Thanks to Lilia and Irene of LivedStories for the gorgeous pictures. I can't stop looking at them. Have a great week everyone, and remember, it's already HUMP DAY! I finished another one on our vacation trip, but only got the chance to photograph it this past weekend. I used the Moody Kerchief pattern by Kirsten Kapur of Through the Loop). The winner of the shawl, Alexandra, wanted this shawl in the Twig and Peacock colorways of Quince & Co's Chickadee yarn.

This was quite a quick knit, and I'm glad I was able to get to it during the trip. Alexandra, I'll be sending your shawl later this week. :) I hope you like it. Thanks again to Irene of LivedStories and the lovely Lilia for the beautiful photos!

Next week I'll share a few new items I've knit up for the shop. Have a great week everyone, and enjoy the long weekend!

You know what that means? It's knitting season!! Yes!!!! I can now bust out my bulky and super bulky yarns and knit soft, cushy, super-squeezable, ultra-warm items for Fall and Winter.

This year I'm hoping to be ahead of the holiday rush by starting on items for my Etsy Shop. I worked on an oldie but goodie, the Scrunchable Scarf pattern by Susan McConne, while we were on vacation in Hawaii. I knit the scarf in Loops & Threads Cozy Wool (one of my favorite bulky yarns) and added a shell crochet border on one edge to give it a little touch of whimsy.

Y'all know I love lots of pictures, so here you go!
I made some headbands and matching mitts for my first Craft Fair way back in April. However due to a number of factors, we had very low patronage at the fair and I sold only three items. Now I can't sell these headbands and mitts on Etsy because the designer also makes them for sale on there. I however cannot wear all 6 headbands and 3 mitts, so I thought I would have a short sale here on my blog and on my Facebook page.

The price for each headband is $16, and for a pair of mitts is $20. All items are made from top quality yarn. The green, fuchsia, rust red and goldenrod items were knit in Classic Elite Waterlily yarn, the Flame Red headband in Manos del Uruguay Wool Clasica, and the Cadmium Headband and Mitts in Malabrigo Merino Worsted.

Here's the deal I have for you:
Buy 1: 10% off
Buy 2: 15% off
Buy 3: 20% off..... you get the idea.

Below are the pictures of the headbands and mitts. They will make great gifts. If you are interested, please email me at niseyknits@gmail.com. Shipping will be $5.50, and sales tax will be applied for California residents.
As I would love to have the sales and feedback ratings on Etsy, I will set up a reserved listing (without pictures) for the items on my Etsy shop with the buyer's name attached, so you can purchase through there. Please let me know if this is a problem and we can work around it. I have one of each item, and I'll give it out on a first come, first serve basis. Thank you all so much for helping me out with this, and have a great rest of the week!

I designed it for my mom to showcase my newly acquired knitting skills. I ended up submitting the pattern to Tangled magazine, and it was accepted. The magazine Tangled Nearly Fall 2012 just came out, and my pattern is in there!! Woohoo!!

This version was knit in KnitPicks Swish Worsted yarn, in the Dove Heather colorway. It's a shawl, and a blanket. It's up to you to choose how to wear it. And the pattern is free on the Tangled magazine website. Enjoy it, and I can't wait to see pictures if you do knit one!

UPDATE: You can download the pattern directly here.
In fact, she loved it so much that she took almost 60 pictures of this one scarf.

The pattern is the Drop Stitch Scarf by Christine Vogel. I think I've knit almost 10 of these scarves. They are quick and easy to carry around, so I default to them whenever I want a simple project for nights (like today) when I'm exhausted and don't want to think about my knitting.

It just so happened that I had two skeins of the Crystal Palace Yarns Panda Silk DK Print leftover from the first one, so I decided to surprise her with one of these scarves as a birthday present. Her birthday also just happens to be our wedding anniversary! I'll be giving her the gift later this week. I thought I would celebrate her big day with a post, because she's been a great help in getting my business off the ground with all these wonderful pictures she's taken for me. Happy Birthday Irene!! :)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15392202289779410465noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2691802619657868095.post-35937853754757263372012-07-25T17:42:00.000-07:002012-07-25T17:42:00.133-07:00Away on vacation

I have to catch a flight at 8:30am, which means I have to be up in 3 hours. And yet, I'm up. I didn't know it at the time, of course, but I took on more than I could handle when I held this giveaway and awarded 6 prizes. :) Don't get me wrong - I'm not sad at all about the giveaway. I was just so excited to get the chance to knit six different shawl designs by Kirsten Kapur that I jumped right in. I'm ashamed to admit that till now, I had only finished two shawls. Only two out of the six.

In a bid to cleanse away a bit of that shame and get the gifts to the recipients, I've finally finished two more of the shawls. They are both knit from the Snow Drops and Snap Peas shawl pattern (that was the winner if I recall. A lot of people loved it.) The red version is knit in the Hollyberry colorway of KnitPicks Swish DK. I started the shawl in October last year, and just finished in June this year. Tsk tsk tsk...bad bad Denise. :) I also finally got my schedule to line up with Lilia's (the model) and Irene (the photographer), so I have really beautiful pictures this week!

I just had a photo shoot this past weekend and I'm so excited to share the photos with you later on this week. However it gave me an idea: if you have a NiseyKnits handmade item, I would love for you to take a photo of you wearing it and share it on my NiseyKnits Facebook page here. I really, really, really (really) want to see how it looks on you, my lovely customers. :) Thank you, and I hope you have a wonderful week!

PS: Here's a picture of one of my very first scarves, from the Falling Water pattern by Bonnie Sennott (because you all know how I feel about posts without pictures). :)
I got a long needed vacation and the week just flew by before I knew what was happening. I hope you all enjoyed your July 4th festivities, and are ready for the second half of 2012. Crazy right? Second half ALREADY.

Anyway, today, I'm here to let you know that I finally knitted something for myself!! Yay!! I don't know how long it's been since I made something for myself. I started the Xenia shawl by Vanessa Smith, but it's lying in the WIP basket because I got swamped with design submissions in the past three months. Once the Knitscene Accessories 2012 magazine came out and I saw my Sunehri Shawl in all it's glory, I decided to knit one for myself!
I originally designed this shawl in Malabrigo Worsted Merino, in the Cadmium colorway. I had just a little less than one skein left at home, so I decided to use it up in a shawl for myself. Now if you haven't tried my pattern, let me talk it up a little. It's super simple. Very, very simple. After the two set up rows, you basically repeat the same two rows over and over again until you've knit 32 reps, then you knit the edging, which is just another version of the two rows you just worked ad nauseum. I started knitting at church a couple of weeks ago, and was 25 reps in within two days of knitting (not two full days of knitting, mind you! LOL!).
I finally got the chance to block and photograph this past week at home, and thought I'd share it with you. My shawl is smaller than the original as I didn't have enough yarn to make the size stipulated in the pattern. It's still very pretty and I can't wait to wear it! :) Plus, isn't that Cadmium color just beautiful to look at? And Malabrigo, what can I say about Malabrigo? Definitely one of my top yarns to knit with.

I mean, I was ready to start on my new project with my newly purchased scrumptious yarn, and then I read "Take time to check your gauge". Grrr!! Suffice it to say that I went for a few years as a knitter without ever knitting a gauge swatch.

Gauge Swatch for my Wrapped in Clouds Shawl pattern

Then I started designing. And that's when I realized how important making a gauge swatch is. It isn't just a waste of time and yarn. It's like a little mini-prototype of whatever project you will be working on. And that little square of knitting gives a lot of information.

How so? Well, let's say I'm designing a simple scarf using worsted weight yarn. I cast on between 20-30 stitches and work about 20-30 rows of the pattern I'm going to be using. Then I block the swatch like I would the real scarf - if it's wool I would soak it in a little solution with wool wash; if it's acrylic, bamboo or cotton, I would steam block, then pin it out until the design looks like I imagined. (Some designers even poke, prod and manhandle the swatch, hoping to imitate how the item would be used in real life, to see how it holds up. I'm not that advanced yet. :) )

Gauge swatch for the Long Way Scarf pattern

By knitting a gauge swatch and then blocking, I can measure and figure out how many rows will give an inch so I know how many rows to knit to get the scarf as long as I want it. Also, I will be able to get how many stitches to cast on to get an inch for the width of the scarf. Commonly, the gauge of a pattern is given in 4 inches, with the needle size also stated e.g. 10 rows and 13 stitches = 4 inches/10cm on US #10.5 needles in stockinette stitch. With this information, you can also figure out how much yarn you need for a project.

Anyway, why this long ramble about swatches? Because I was looking through my photos and realized I have quite a few swatches (a box of them actually), and I wanted to share them with you. I must confess though that unless I'm knitting a piece of clothing like a sweater where gauge can make or break the item, I very rarely make a gauge swatch. Over the years I've realized that I knit very loosely, so if it's a scarf or shawl, I'll probably go down a needle size to get close to the gauge.
The moral of this post then, is that you should check your gauge, especially when knitting garments and items that require an exact fit. For scarves, well...I'll leave that up to you. :)
Have a great week!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15392202289779410465noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2691802619657868095.post-84981070930677273042012-06-20T00:00:00.000-07:002012-06-20T00:00:10.866-07:00Every Guest is an Angel in DisguiseOne of our very close friends and former roommate is visiting for a couple of weeks and staying with us. The only room we have is my unofficial craft studio, which meant that I had to do a bit of spring cleaning. But that was a blessing in disguise because it gave me the chance to reorganize and make more space in the room.

As usual, I made a mountain out of a molehill with this project, or as the hubster would say , "you make a big project out of a small task." My initial idea was to sort all my yarn by weight and then by color, photograph each one, and record it in an inventory spreadsheet.

The first step in this "awesome" plan was to sort the yarn out. We have a lot of Pampers boxes lying around the house so those became sorting boxes for my yarn lovelies.

I labeled the boxes with the yarn weights and got to sorting, carefully unloading them from the bookcases where they've been residing for the past year.

The whole room was in flux. I moved some smaller bookcases around, and wondered what to do with this little black table that had been hanging around in the study for a while. It became a waiting station during the changes, holding yarn, needles, letters and a needle case. It looked like this during the process.

All of this first stage took place on Friday. Saturday was busy with a potluck and visitors dropping by the house in rapid succession. I didn't get to the room again till Sunday morning. Our friend was arriving Monday. I had to work some magic. I'm pleased to say that I got a magic wand, or a magic burst of energy and inspiration to finish clearing/rearranging the room! :)

ALL of my knitting supplies and accoutrements fit in that little corner of the study after I was done! Isn't that awesome? And see that little table? I put my plastic drawer set on top, and hid my WIPs in a Pampers box that fit neatly underneath it. More WIPs are in that wooden basket on top. I even labeled boxes that held business cards, stickers etc (those pesky little things you can never find when you actually need them), and labeled the drawers that held them so I wouldn't forget where anything was.

I organized my little button collection into cute solid food jars from when my son was an infant, and put my safety pins and quilting pins (for blocking) into little square containers I got at Rite Aid for 4 for $1.

And the other side of the room? Bare! With lots of space. Even my friend was surprised when he walked in on Monday night, as he knew what it looked like previously. All in all, I think it was mostly successful.

Unfortunately, my inventory-recording and photo-taking session didn't come to pass. But not to worry. I hear I have a few days off coming soon, so there will definitely be a yarn photo session. Have a great week!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15392202289779410465noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2691802619657868095.post-61018277202628062542012-06-13T06:30:00.000-07:002012-06-13T06:30:05.916-07:00Some fun little mittsI just thought I'd share this quick post about some fun mitts I've just enjoyed knitting. I think I've made four of them so far, but I only have pictures of two of them. The pattern is the Lacefield Mitts by Adrienne Krey. I first came across the Blue Leaf Headband, also by Adrienne, and clicked through to the mitts. They are extremely quick to knit (I knit the most recent one within two hours on a plane ride) and the results are fantastic.
NOTE: I've knit 6 of the headbands too, but I don't have any pictures of those yet. I'll put them up as soon as I do. They are as addictive to knit as the mitts.

So far, I've knit three of them in Classic Elite Waterlily (I love this yarn!) in a golden yellow, green and rust red colors, and one in Malabrigo Merino Worsted in Cadmium Colorway. The pictures below are of the rust red and Malabrigo Mitts. As usual, thanks to Zeina Newman for being a willing model.

First, the dark red/rust red one:

And the pair in Malabrigo Merino Worsted (cadmium colorway). How bright is that yellow? I love it!!

I thought I'd share with you some of the patterns that made me want to pick up my needles and pull a knitting all-nighter (in addition to mine that is, hehehe). However, just like with clothing and accessories you would see in a store, you might think something is gorgeous but it might not be your style. So this list is not meant to offend or belittle any design that's not mentioned here. I seriously LOVE all of them, but I know I won't be able to ever knit them all. Or will I? (maybe a challenge to knit all the accessories in this magazine might be fun!)

Here goes.

I've been on a recent fingerless mitts binge so that the Reservoir Mitts by Allyson Dykhuizen caught my eye at first glance. I was immediately drawn to the interplay of pink and brown in an entrelac dance and thought "I want a pair in those same exact colors!"

Next is the Aristida Shawl by Alexandra Beck. The pattern looks simple enough, but the way the diamonds and eyelets are arranged keeps bringing me back. And personally, I think the fringe is the icing on the cake. Also the grey color of the yarn used gives it an elegant, rustic feel compared to most shawls which have a more delicate, ethereal feel. I really, really, really hope I can make time to knit this shawl.
I was both excited and sad when I first saw the Sea Legs Scarf by Allison Haas. "Why sad?" you ask. Because I had had a similar idea to make a traveling cables scarf. However, I'm still pretty young at knitting and designing and didn't have the chops to get the design out of my head onto paper and yarn. However Allison's version is soooooooooooooo much better than what I even imagined, and I'm so glad she got to it first. It's a unisex scarf so it will be a great last minute gift for a loved one. I also love that it's loooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggg! 92 inches long! Yes! And the traveling cables? Absolutely SEXY!(Yes, I'm currently into cables. I DIG cables.)
Another one I would like to try is the Orbs Cowl by Robin Ulrich, mainly because the way the model posed with it is very cool! No, that's not the reason. Sorry! :) I've actually wanted to learn how to knit welts and this cowl looks pretty awesome with all the welts moving up and down in that hypnotic chevron wave. And it looks like a quick project, which makes me even happier.
Talking about quick projects, the Inishbofin Cowl by Heidi Todd Kozar keeps drawing my attention each time I flip through the magazine. As I said earlier, I currently dig cables, and this little cowl is awash with cables. Happiness! It's beautiful, simple, and looks to be quick. Watch out now, I might ACTUALLY cast on for this one.
Now these last two are for when I finally master my fear of colorwork. The Wellington Mitts by Rebecca Blair is the cover pattern, and is beautiful. Pink and grey together make a striking combination, and those zigzag stripes aren't playing around either. This pattern is so cute and just right for a hip young adult who wants to look cute but also wants to stay warm during the fall and winter (Right? I know a couple of those).

The Equilibrium Cowl is one of those patterns that show me that I still have a long way to go. I couldn't figure out how Carolyn Kern got those two different patterns on both sides of the cowl while knitting in the round. I'll have to take a look at the pattern. This cowl is just stunning, and I will be very proud of myself if I ever make it.
There are so many lovely designs in this magazine. If you haven't bought your copy yet, what are you waiting for? :) Hehehhe...just saying, buy a copy and help a sister out. Knit my designs and all the others in there. In fact, since the magazine is all accessories, what say you to a challenge to knit all or most of the patterns? I'm up for it if you are! Let me know, and enjoy the rest of your week!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15392202289779410465noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2691802619657868095.post-35282546145592911252012-05-30T08:00:00.000-07:002012-05-30T08:00:10.552-07:00Fun times in my Etsy shopI hope you all had a restful long weekend. I was so excited last week about my patterns coming out in the Knitscene Accessories 2012 that I forgot to mention that some of the items I made for the craft fair are now available in my Etsy shop. Drum roll please!

The first up is this Skinny Drop Stitch scarf that I knit in Malabrigo Silky Merino, Viena colorway. I love this pattern so much that I've knit 3 more since this one. I haven't had the chance to block and photograph the other 3, but when I do, I'll make sure to share them with you. It's now up in my Etsy shop here. The Viena colorway I used in this scarf is one of my absolute favorites, as the brown, yellow and orange colors just make a very bold statement. As usual, thanks to Zeina Newman, my fabulous model, for her outstanding work.
These next two scarves are knit from my Colliding Stars pattern. I love this simple pattern, and the Classic Elite Waterlily yarn is a dream to work with. As the pattern is so simple, the scarves work up very quickly.
